Whitehall closed off after naked man straddles historic statue for three hours

A mystery man brought Whitehall to a standstill today after he climbed to the top of a historic 30-foot statue - and perched there naked for three hours.

Police were forced to close an entire section of the road - which runs between the Houses of Parliament and Trafalgar Square - while specialist officers tried to coax the man down.

But despite temperatures hovering around 8C, chilled further by a stout south-westerly breeze, the exhibitionist, thought to be in his 30s, remained stubbornly on his perch where he struck a variety of poses.

Finally, after just over three hours atop the life-size memorial to Prince George, the First Duke of Cambridge and a distant cousin of the Queen, he was finally brought down and taken away in a police van.

MailOnline understands he has not been arrested but detained under the mental health act at a secure hospital in London.

The spectacle began at around midday today, when the man scaled the statue and threw all his clothes to the ground.
Crowds of wonder-struck passers by gathered around the police cordon to watch the exhibition unfold.

At one point the man perched acrobatically - with his arms out stretched for balance - upon the Duke's feathered plume, before sitting down on his head.

Onlooker Savannah Severn, 16, said: 'I was on a school trip, on my way to the National Portrait Gallery and I looked up and saw the naked man on the statue.

'There were police on horses pushing the crowd back and firemen were trying to get him down.
'I was really shocked but it was quite funny. It looked like he was posing and he hard his arms stretched out wide.'
The man's motives for the extravagant display of public nudity remain unclear.

Scotland Yard said it was believed that the man might have a knife as officers shut down part of the road, near the heart of Westminster in central London.

Whitehall runs from the Houses of Parliament to Trafalgar Square and is where the Ministry of Defence is situated.

Police had cordoned off a section of around 100 metres of Whitehall, near Trafalgar Square.

Several police cars and ambulances were on the scene.

Crowds of onlookers had gathered at either end of the cordon. The naked man is believed to have been clothed when he climbed on to the statue.

A police officer said the cordon had been pushed back because the man got angry with people taking photos of him.
He said there had been reports of 'implements' being found in the man's clothes.

Passerby Leanne, on her way home from St Thomas' Hospital, said it was hilarious.

'We had to get out of the cab because it couldn't get through - we didn't expect this,' she said.

'It's hilarious, we'll it's obviously not funny for people who can't get through but climbing a statue with no  clothes on is one way to bring London to a standstill.'

He could be seen waving his arms, apparently speaking to emergency services on the ground, and did not seem to be holding anything.

A spokesman said: 'We are talking to the man and will try and bring the situation to a resolution a soon as we can.'

While the statue of Prince George will be well-used to pigeons perching on its head, naked people are rare.

Born in Germany in 1819, the Duke was the son of Prince Adolphus, Duke of Cambridge, the 10th child and 7th son of King George III and Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz.

As a man he joined the British army and rose to the rank of Commander-in-Chief of the Forces from 1856 to 1895.

He died of a stomach haemorrhage in 1904 at Gloucester House, Piccadilly, London, and was buried in Kensal Green Cemetery, London.

His title, the Duke of Cambridge, fell into extinction upon his death and was not revived until 107 years later, when Elizabeth II awarded the title to her grandson, Prince William, now the Second Duke of Cambridge.

Why 'smart light bulbs' are awesome.

0 komentar
A regular lightbulb tends to come in one color and one brightness level. But now new LED bulbs promise to become any color and any brightness at any time you like. And best of all, they can be controlled by the phone in your pocket.

The most interesting thing about smart bulbs is that software companies can make all kinds of interesting applications to control them. For example, imagine a virtual flash application that replaces the camera's flash on your phone. You could set it to suddenly brighten all the bulbs in the room with white light at the moment you take a picture.

Another likely app idea is that you could take a picture of a page in a magazine or somebody's actual home and essentially tell your lightbulbs: "Give me this lighting or color scheme."

The bottom line is that smart bulbs turn lighting into an app. And with apps, anything is possible.

When things in your life seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hours in a day are not enough, remember the mayonnaise jar and the 2 Beers.

A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him. When the class began, he wordlessly picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.

The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls. He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was.

The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else. He asked once more if the jar was full.. The students responded with a unanimous 'yes.'

The professor then produced two Beers from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar effectively filling the empty space between the sand.The students laughed..

'Now,' said the professor as the laughter subsided, 'I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the important things---your family, your children, your health, your friends and your favorite passions---and if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full. The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house and your car.. The sand is everything else---the small stuff.

'If you put the sand into the jar first,' he continued, 'there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for life.

If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff you will never have room for the things that are important to you.

Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness.

Spend time with your children. Spend time with your parents. Visit with grandparents. Take your spouse out to dinner. Play another 18. There will always be time to clean the house and mow the lawn.

Take care of the golf balls first---the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand.

One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the Beer represented. The professor smiled and said, 'I'm glad you asked.' The Beer just shows you that no matter how full your life may seem, there's always room for a couple of Beers with a friend.

Just Another Poem

ALL I CAN'T SAY

There are so many words I cannot say,
when I look into your eyes.
I want to be able to tell you one day,
but I'm left speechless every time that I try.

You must have stumbled across the key,
and discovered so much more.
You found a hidden place in me,
you found my heart and opened the door.
And I cried in pain
of losing my dear friend.

Will it ever be the same again?
If it passes will it be the end?
I realized it was worth so much,
as I lie in bed that night.
So I allowed my soul to be touched,
without even putting up a fight.
Are my eyes deceiving me,
when I see you standing there?
Are you playing games,
just to prove I care?

You speak my name in a prelude,
in a reference to love,
with such loving attitude,
as if it were a message from above.
With the palms of your hands
pressed firmly against mine,
a white doves lands,
and the sun begins to shine.

Someday I will see,
though that day has not come yet.
You'll say you love me,
but will you ever forget?
If that happens and my spirit dies,
if my emotions drop,
will you want to hold me when I cry?
Or will the love just suddenly stop?
We can't expect to fall in love and never cry.

You'll stay and play your part,
but after the beauty starts to die,
will your footprints still be on my heart?
Though it would be hard to say goodbye,
your friend I'll always be,
as long as we always try,
to keep the friendship between you and me.

The letter I will not send
will casually inquire,
how could you have brought it to an end?
I was your one desire.
After this life is over,
you'll be one person I know I'll miss.

It'll be too late to start over, and so I leave you with this...
I'll hold you for a lifetime,
if you'll just hold my hand.
We could have a wonderful time,
in the days we have not yet planned.

"What is Success"
by Ralph Waldo Emerson

To laugh often and much;
To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children;
To earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends;
To appreciate beauty;
To find the best in others;
To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition;
To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived;
This is to have succeeded.
